Philip Hii's tour

Philip Hii, who recently became well known for his Bach transcriptions and his outstanding Bach CD, was invited to play six concerts in Germany in November 1994. His performances were in Berlin, Chemnitz, Saarbrücken, Kaiserlauten, Heidelberg and Köln. His programmes included Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor, the Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue, and pieces by Webern, Barrios and Mertz. In particular, his breathtaking performance of Bach's Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue caused a sensation. I have never heard a guitarist play with such a clean virtuosity combined with a depth, true musicality as Mr Hii.

Two new transcriptions were included: Anton Webern's Variations for Piano op. 27, an Bach's Contrapunctus I from Art of Fugue.

In the first part of his masterclass at the University of Köln, Philip Hii talked about his transcriptions, his three-finger scales and the flow in music. His ideas about rhythm and playing freely within the pulse were especially interesting. His teaching was characterised by a deep understanding of the students' problems and in finding solutions to these problems.

Philip Hii's tour was so successful that he has already received invitations for his next tour.
